Hi my name is Cher…and I am a can-aholic. I cannot pass up the canned goods aisle in my local grocery store. I love buying canned goods and my husband constantly asks me why we need 16 diced tomatoes or 12 cans of corn. Basically if there was ever a zombie apocalypse, our house would be the one to come eat at since my pantry is overfilled with canned goods.
What I love about cans is that they have a long expiration and they always taste fresh to me. One of my favorite dishes, Sweet Potato Crisp, uses canned sweet potatoes and it is amazing. My dad actually fought with me one year saying I couldn’t possibly have used canned sweet potatoes! No peeling potatoes or boiling or dicing for me, just opening up the can and mixing them in! Worried canned goods are not as healthy? According to a University of California, Davis study, many canned fruits and vegetables have the same nutrients as their fresh or frozen varieties.
“Cans Get You Cooking” is a program dedicated to spreading the message that the ironclad technology of cans seals in freshness, flavor, nutrition and goodness so families can create good meals at home to enjoy. They are encouraging homes to have a well-stocked “Cantry” so families can enjoy home-cooked meals more often at home. Canned goods definitely make homemade meals at my home a lot easier, and with three kids 6 and under I need all the help I can get! I am also terrible with using fresh fruits and vegetables before they expire, and I am not alone as 73% of Americans throw away spoiled fruits and vegetable on average two times a week. Canned goods have a lot longer expirations that fresh foods. For me they are a staple item that I cannot live without. From Bush Brothers to Del Monte to Progresso to Red Gold diced tomatoes, I love all brands of canned goods!

While I have a garden well most years I get one and do a lot of canning and freezing I still have to stock up on key things. Like mandarin oranges and sweet peas. Those 2 things go like wildfire in this house.
