The other day I was sitting on the couch with my laptop and I looked around at my family only to see all four of them engrossed in their own tablet, smartphone or the television. Everyone we go or look it seems like there is technology, which is a good thing of course but it is also another thing we have to be conscious of especially with our families. Blue light is exactly that – blue and light – but its damaging because its a high-energy wavelength that can penetrate all the way to the back of the eye. People just become more susceptible to eye diseases like macular degeneration. It is actually a fact now that the incidence rate of AMD (age-related macular degeneration) for people 50 and over in the U.S. has increased by 25 percent over the last decade. Over time or constant use, blue lights can cause damage, especially on young kids because they don’t have the ocular lens pigments adults have. Crazy, but it makes total sense. I don’t know about you but I prefer my eyes to last as long as I do and I need to make sure my family’s eyes do too.
Well a company I have recently become familiar with offers blue light protection, in the form of regular lenses. So yeah not those crazy lenses from infomercials, but regular lens with extra features built in. UNITY lenses not only offer blue light protection but also UVA and UVB radiation. The lenses also help filter the specific wavelengths that impact the sleep/wake cycle. They are meant to be used everyday and they can actually help the helps relax.
Who would be a good candidate for UNITY blue light lenses?
- Children under 18
- Post cataract patients
- Patients who use computers or digital devices throughout the day
- Patients at risk for AMD
I know for me, I can’t think of who wouldn’t benefit from UNITY lenses. Everyone today seems to be using digital devices or they fit in the children under 18 or older patients with eye issues categories. I didn’t know this but even if you don’t wear glasses, there are reasons you might want to including working on a computer daily, being on your smartphone or tablet 24/7, and even if your just going outside you should be at least wearing sunglasses. UNITY lenses with Outdoor BluTech are lenses that offer 100% protection from the sun radiation and filter harmful blue light through virtually any sunglass frame. So basically even if you don’t have a eye prescription, there is no excuse for not wearing sunglasses at least.
How do you keep your family’s eyes safe?
Tammy S says
I know we get some kind of special coating on my daughter’s lens but I am not sure if it’s to help protect her eyes from blue light. After reading this, I am going to make sure when she get’s her eyes checked in September that we make sure they get us the right kind of lenses.
