Disclosure: I received compensation in exchange for sharing this information and my honest opinion.
My oldest is nearing 8 years old and while I didn’t get my first cell phone until I was 17 or 18, kids nowadays are asking for them much sooner. No it doesn’t mean we as parents need to give them phones that young, but for many parents it is something they are leaning towards. Choosing their first phone can be somewhat of a daunting task though because there are so many choices out there.
Well I have found a perfect first phone for tweens, the Pantech Vybe. Why is it perfect? It is affordable, easy to use, includes features that both kids and parents want, and it has a low-cost monthly rate when added to a family plan. I know for our plan its only about $10 to add a phone which would share our data, text and calling. The phone is usually what costs so much but the Pantech Vybe is only $29.99 with a new 2-year agreement.
What features did I like on the phone:
- Full-slide out QWERTY keyboard – which makes it easy for little fingers to quickly type out a message to you or write a social media post, and my son actually thought it was cool that he had a keyboard slide out.
- Large touchscreen display with customizable homescreen – Let’s face it kids want to customize their stuff and with this phone they can easily slide the icons they will use over to where they want them. The screen is a good size at 3.2 inches. My son loved having his games all on one screen and me not yelling at him which I tend to do when he moves icons around on my phone!
- Quick camera button on the side – no searching for the camera app! My son loved being able to take his own pictures when he wanted.
- Handsfree option and one-touch Say-A-Command button – my son loved being handsfree when he was chatting with his friend while they were both playing a game on their tablets.
- Cost of only $29.99 (with a 2 year contract) plus affordable rate with AT&T to add to a family plan.
- It is a perfect starter phone for kids where they can do a few things they want to do but not too much. They can browse the web, check Facebook and Twitter (if you allow them to have an account for them of course), play a few games, take pictures/video and easily make phone calls/send text messages.
- Its not just for tweens either. If you have a teen who is driving this phone works for any age. You can have piece of mind with AT&T Drive Mode, which blocks incoming calls and texts when driving and even use AT&T Family Map to check the location of them via an interactive map.
