If you Google the word “Hero” the definition you’ll find refers to “characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity.” There is a lot in that definition and it seems like its referring to a superhero but really a hero can be anyone. Everyday there are heroes all around us doing good deeds, both big and small.
My kids are Everyday Heroes in their own way and while I don’t always recognize it, they can be pretty amazing kids. Like I said being a hero doesn’t have to be something huge like saving a life or putting out a fire, but it can be something as small as helping out a sibling or cleaning something without asking. As a mom I will take all the help I can get and when I get help without having to ask (or demand) I consider that a good deed aka being a hero. It may be a stretch but I’ll take it.
I’d say the first time I noticed my boys being heroes was when their sister was born. They were so young themselves but they immediately became little protectors of her and helpers for me. They watched her when she slept and came running to me when she stirred. They made sure she didn’t crawl somewhere she wasn’t supposed to and they got her whatever she needed.
This is one of my favorite pictures from the hospital showing just how much Aidan was immediately her protector. To her I’m sure they are her heroes.
One movie that is a great example of Everyday Heroes is “Disney Planes Fire & Rescue.” It is a movie that features a plane who decides to train to be a firefighter plane, assuming it is easy. Being a firefighter is anything but easy he soon learns it requires a lot of hard work and to listen to others. After some hard lessons he learns that by with teamwork and following directions, he can be a hero. He of course ends up saving some lives but he doesn’t do it for the glory, he does it because it is the right thing to do which is what makes him a hero. Firefighters especially are Everyday Heroes because they risk their lives everyday for people they don’t even know.

This movie is so cute! And my son loves it. Whenever we turn on the tv to watch a movie, he always says, “Airplanes, Airplanes!”
