The Bavarian capital is home to some typically kitschy attractions (Oktoberfest, lederhosen, pretzels), as well as some world-class galleries and museums. Short breaks to Munich are all about unforgettable tours, beautiful sights, amazing history, sumptuous food, and so much more! Some sights that you shouldn’t miss for any short break are elaborated below.
Hofbräuhaus
Visit this most famous of Munich sites; they are perfect for teetotallers and families: it’s the world’s most celebrated beer hall with an impressive interior. Come here and dine sumptuously on traditional Bavarian food like the famous beer-roasted pork while listening to an oompah-band: you can’t get more German than this.
Holareidulijö
Fun for kids’ (and adults’) dressing up and hipster vintage hunters alike, a stay in Munich would be incomplete without a visit to this second-hand traditional clothing store, for all of your lederhosen and dirndl needs.
Alte Pinakothek
This neoclassical temple is home to a large collection of Dutch, German, and Italian Old Masters. Worth visiting for the building and cafe alone, the art collection won’t disappoint either- it’s possible to book a very informative tour, or to show yourself around. A great rainy-day activity with kids.
Marienplatz
At the centre of Munich lies Marienplatz, the square at the heart of the gorgeous old town. Various bike and walking tours are available, but walking around and drinking in the atmosphere is just as exciting. From beer halls to gargoyles and the Marian column to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation, you won’t be short of sights and history here. The Rathus (town hall) has a glockenspiel with 43 bells and 32 figures; come and marvel at its performances.
Munich is a top European destination, with lots to offer every visitor from kids to adults. As the list of top attractions above shows, there’s more to the Bavarian capital than beer and pretzels. With history, culture, art, great food and fun at your fingertips, Munich has something to offer everyone.
