Trying to remember a time without tablets is hard. We have owned a tablet since the first iPad came out and back then it was a small fortune. Tablets have come down in price since then but they are still expensive. Well just in time for the holiday season, Walmart has an Intel Based Nextbook tablet priced at just $99.
I got the chance to check out the Nextbook 8″ Tablet loaded with Windows 8.1 and it is a great little tablet! Well actually its not so little, as eight inches is a great size for an tablet. This would make a great starter tablet for both kids and adults. I hesitant to say starter since you can actually do a lot on the tablet but it is limited in the sense it doesn’t have access to the Google Play store or iTunes since it is Windows based. The Windows App store seems limited compared to the other app stores, if that makes sense.
Basically this Nextbook is like a mini-computer. We have a Windows touch screen desktop and this tablet is similar. My kids are used to swiping the screen and tiles and the new Windows makes its so much easier for them to access their favorite games. It is so different than the Windows I grew up with!
Since the Nextbook is similar to a computer you can do pretty much whatever you can on a desktop on this tablet. Surf the web, play games, stream videos, use Microsoft Office – yes it has Microsoft Office – and so much more! It comes pre-loaded with tons of great apps so its ready to go and then you can go to the Windows store and download more, both free and ones that cost money. If you have a Xbox Live account you can even play games you purchased for that on this tablet and vice versa. We don’t have the paid Xbox Live account, so it doesn’t matter if you do, its just something else it can do.

Overall, this is a great tablet, especially for the price. I like to use it for checking my emails, reading books and watching Netflix on it. My kids love the games and my husband loves the sports app he recently found. It is a great size for traveling and everyday use.
