    We are getting closer and closer to election time this year but not everyone is necessarily interested in politics, or even understands everything. I admit I am not completely informed about our candidates enough to make a good decision but have a goal to change that.

    Well Peanuts has come out with a fun kit to raise awareness for the 2016 presidential election and help kids (and students) understand about the campaign process. The program helps to explain the role that campaign tactics play in the political process and engage in voting. As a parent I want my children to understand more about politics and how our system works.

    For kids:

    There are coloring sheets and a word game perfect to get kids thinking about the upcoming election, but in a fun way.

    Are you a teacher?

    The Peanuts Rocks the Vote website breaks down the campaign information into Grades K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. There are activities for kids to complete, resources to reference, ways to engage conversations and more.

    I absolutely love how Peanuts has made the election season more engaging and understandable for kids. I have even learned a few things from the campaign and feel better educated to answer some of my kid’s questions.

    While your reading all the campaign information from the website, don’t forget to vote for your favorite character! You’ll want to of course read about character so you can make an educated decision!

    peanuts-vote-22Nikki DeLoach was interviewed by some Peanuts Ambassadors and shared about the Peanuts Rocks the Vote campaign. Below are some of her Q&A’s:

    Tell us about the Peanuts Rocks the Vote campaign.

    This is a partnership between Peanuts and Rock the Vote, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that’s been encouraging and helping young people to register to vote since 1990.

    When you go to Peanuts Rocks the Vote dot com, you’ll find a mock presidential election going on among the Peanuts characters: Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Sally, and Franklin. You can read their bios and their platforms, and then you can vote for your favorite.

    Then, right there on the website, there’s a button that says “Register,” and when you click on that, Rock the Vote will help you register to vote in your location.

    And why is Peanuts doing this?

    Politics has been a recurring theme in the Peanuts comic strip for decades—Charles Schulz often had the characters running for president during actual presidential election years. He even had Lucy talking about wanting to be the first female president!

    So Schulz believed in our democratic system, and Peanuts wanted to play their part by helping people register to vote. But of course, they do it with a unique Peanuts flair!

    Are you a Peanuts fan?

    Of course! Who isn’t?!

    I know a lot of celebrities—including yourself!—have taped fun PSAs promoting the Peanuts election and the Peanuts Rocks the Vote campaign. What made you want to do one?

    I just feel that it’s such a privilege to be a citizen of this country, and part of the deal is that we participate in the election process. I know sometimes people, especially young people, feel that their vote doesn’t count or doesn’t matter, but of course that’s absolutely not true! It’s so important that everyone use their voice and their vote. And this was such a fun way to get that message out!

    And finally, I know the Schulz Museum has two special election-themed exhibits on display right now. Can you talk about those?

    Yes, and they sound so great!

    One is called Snoopy Presents: Lucky Dogs and Presidential Pets, and it features photos and fun facts about presidential pets. The exhibit goes all the way back to George Washington’s hunting hounds and Thomas Jefferson’s riding horses, and it also includes presidential pets you probably never heard about, like President John Quincy Adams’ pet alligator, who lived in the White House in an unfinished East Room bathtub!

    There’s a great display on John F. Kennedy’s dog, Pushinka, who was a gift from Soviet Premier Nikita Khruschev. The dog’s mother, Strelka, flew aboard Sputnik 5 and landed safely back on Earth.

    The other exhibition is called Mr. Schulz Goes to Washington, which focuses on the intersection of politics with Charles Schulz and Peanuts. You can see some of Schulz’s correspondence with several American presidents, including a 1980 letter from Ronald Reagan, who was then in the middle of his own presidential campaign. Reagan jokingly wrote, “Anything you can do to talk Snoopy out of running will be appreciated. How would he feel about a cabinet post?”

    Oh and there is a movie of course!

    Back in 1972, the Peanuts gang journeyed into politics through a student-body president campaign. Check out the DVD You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown for animated movie fun!

      My love for Snoopy has been with me all my life…so much so that we collect everything Snoopy! And my love for him has moved to my daughter as she’s always on the look out for Snoopy too. She would be tickled pink if I could give this to her!

      My favorite Christmas cartoon is the Charlie Brown Christmas special. Snoopy is almost my favorite character…Charlie Brown is first!

      My mom loved Snoopy. I have her white leather, red dial Snoopy watch from the 70s that I keep in my jewelry box. It was one of the first gifts my dad gave her when they were dating.

      I love Snoopy & he Peanuts gang! I’d rather see Snoopy as President and Woodstock as Vice President!! They are better than the “blockheads” running now!
      Plus Snoopy is an Ace flyer pilot, so he knows about war more than the other wannabes!

      I love Snoopy and Woodstock 🙂 I know I’ve said this next part before, but it’s awesome to me : my aunt got a tattoo at age 80 of Woodstock on her shoulder. She loved him because he was Snoopy’s best friend and always there for Snoopy 🙂

      Snoopy has been a part of my life ever since I was a little kid. I still have my first stuffed Snoopy. 🙂 Glad they are getting the word out to vote.

      I remember as a kid always watching the Peanuts Christmas special and jumping up to dance along with the characters during the dance scene.
