While my kids are getting older, I am slowly starting to cut back on safety around the house. After ten years, we finally removed outlet covers and cabinet locks but I admit I still worry about laundry pods. You know those pods that you just throw in to the machine to simplify machine washing? Well they do look a lot like candy and for a young kid they can be easily mistaken. I do love laundry pods though so usually I just keep them up on a shelf out of kid-reach.
Presto Products Company has come out with a product called Child-Guard that is a child-resistant closure designed for re-sealable flexible packaging. As a mom we all try to do our parts to keep our kids safe and accidental poisonings shouldn’t be something we have to worry about. Flexible packaging represents approximately 18% of all the total packaging market and it’s the fastest growing type of packaging in all consumer goods markets. That means basically that common household products such as laundry detergent, dishwashing soap, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals and lawn and garden products will be sold in flexible packages without a child-resistant closures. Just last year the Center for Disease Control and Prevention received more than 1.3 million calls involving poison exposure for children.
The makers of Child-Guard knew there was a void in the flexible packaging industry for a child-resistant zipper and committed themselves to developing a solution that would satisfy this critical market need.
I got to check out a laundry detergent package with Child-Guard and I will say it is pretty child-resistant. You have to push down a plastic zipper in a designated spot and then un-zip. You can’t just un-zip the package which is what a kid would try to do. I think it is a great first step in keeping kids safe from harmful products.

It would be wonderful if all companies did this, but it would be great if parents kept stuff out of reach from children too. It’s good to have these safeguards in place, though, in case you have a runner or a climber! ?

That’s a smart design, all of the companies should do this.

It’s about time somebody came up with that. Now, I just wish they would give us a choice of child-proof or not. Some older folks don’t have the manual dexterity to work with some of these tamper proof packages.

Good idea–kids can truly get into anything! It’s a great idea to have well child-proofed cabinets in addition to this!
