You’ve got not one but two bundles of joy coming your way. Now you’ll need to prepare twice as much as other parents though. Shopping for newborn twins can be great fun. You’re going to need two of everything though, so here’s a short list of what you should be looking for on your twin shopping adventures.
- Cribs
You don’t need two separate cribs unless that’s how you want to arrange your nursery. Many companies make cribs for twins and you can read reviews before choosing your crib. You can go for a stackable style that works great for smaller spaces, or there are ones with dividers. They come in a variety of different finishes too from whites to woods to beyond.
- Double strollers
Ah, strollers! These are without a doubt one of the most important items new parents will buy. Experts liken the experience to buying a car. You absolutely must test them out at a store. That doesn’t mean you need to buy your stroller from there. Once you find the one you like, you can compare prices and go for the best offer, though you may have some luck convincing the store manager to give you the price you want when you present them with the competition’s price. Double strollers come in all kinds of varieties, including joggers, tandems, travel systems (which include car seats), and umbrella strollers, to name a few. The right one for you will depend on your needs.
- Highchairs
Honestly, highchairs should be low on your list at least initially, because babies don’t sit up independently until around the age of 6 months. When the time comes, you can opt to get two separate highchairs, or you can find a highchair designed for twins. Much of it depends on your space at your table as well as your budget.
- Twin baby carrier
With double the babies comes the need for a twin baby carrier for parents who want to keep their babies close by wearing them. These are especially handy if you’re nursing. They make for a hands-free way to feed both babies at the same time, or simply carry both of them without tiring out your arms. There are styles that allow for one baby to be worn on the front and the other on the back and some allow for both to fit in front. Try them on before you choose one to see which fit suits you best.
- Portable crib/play pen
Just like regular cribs, there are portable cribs that are designed especially for twins. These also double as play pens for when your babies get bigger so you can put them in a safe place without them wandering into harm’s way in the yard or in any room of your home, or even on trips.
- Baby tub floats
Bathing a newborn baby is hard. Imagine bathing two at once! A baby tub float will make it so much easier to keep both your little darlings safe and sound during bath time. They make them for twins too so you can easily bathe both of them at once instead of doing one at a time.
- Car seats
You’ll need a car seat for each child and to keep them safest, you’ll want to look for ones that are rear-facing. You can also save yourself a lot of hassle if you shop for a travel system double stroller so that you can simply put the car seats right into the frame so you don’t have to wake sleeping babies when moving them into the stroller, which is a huge bonus.
Don’t forget all the little clothes, toys, blankets and other things you’ll need too. What are you waiting for? Time to shop!
