I still remember the day my family got our first computer back in the 90’s. It didn’t do much but it was still amazing. Ever since I have been all about computers and technology. My husband is the same and he works as in the computer field today. I could see my 10-year-old ‘s curiosity coming out with computers but building computers today is not what it used to be. No one really builds computers today as they are so cheap to buy and replace.
Kano though has made a computer that kids can not only build but then play. It is a real computer, powered by Raspberry Pi 3 and Kano Operating System.
So the Kano Computer Kit comes with everything you need to build the computer including a monitor and keyboard.
The kit includes a storybook that kids follow page by page with colorful illustrations on each step. It even explains all the parts of the computer.
Some features of the Kano Computer Kit:
- 10.1″ HD screen
- Rechargeable battery so the computer can be used anywhere
- Fully portable especially with how the keyboard clicks in the back
- Kano’s unique operating system allows kids to learn about HDMI, pixels, processors, and binary while in Story Mode.
- Kids can learn to code with step-by-step coding challenges. Python, Javascript, Unix, loops, variables, and logic are easily learned and kids can even earn rewards.
- There are 150 hours of Kano Coding Challenges where kids can make the games their own, including Minecraft, Pong and Snake. Kids can even create animations that move with their voice and code paintings.
- Over 100 apps to download
My son has barely scratched the surface with this but is excited everytime he turns it on. He loves that he can carry it around, room to room and even to his friends house. It is a regular computer for the most part for kids!
I was so amazed at how he set this up on his own and has figured everything out on his own as well. It is funny how when we first opened this I asked my husband to sit down and help, he ended up being in the way! The kit sparked some interest to my 9-year-old as well who doesn’t really have an interest in technology yet, other than playing video games! Both my boys of course perked up when they heard the words “Hack Minecraft.”
My son has said the Kano Computer Kit is the best gift he has ever gotten. He loves especially telling everyone that he built the computer, he is so proud of himself. I am proud that he has found a passion and is quite good at it!

This is a great way to get them into tech (which they are going to need). When my grand daughter gets old enough I will get her one!
