“You have to share!” With three kids, I say that phrase multiple days a day. Sharing is something that is so hard to teach. I mean even as an adult, sometimes I just want my own things when I want them. Sharing though is a necessary life skill.
Here are some ways I teach sharing:
I remind my kids that it’s just temporary. Young kids especially may think that they are never going to get their toy back if they share it with someone else. I explain how they are just letting someone else use the item for a little bit.
Set time limits. Our current struggle is both my boys want to play on Xbox One but we only have one. I set time limits where one get “X” amount of time and then the other gets that amount of time. I am upfront before they start playing so they know when its their turn.
I explain how sharing and kindness can make them happy as they see someone else enjoying something they gave or did for them. Something about seeing others happy can make oneself happy.
Be a role model. I often ask my husband to “share” something just so our kids can see that yes even adults have to share. It may be sharing the couch or it may be sharing a new tech gadget (which yes I can even see in my husband’s eyes that he doesn’t want to share his “new toy” but he does.
Find something else for your child to do or play with. Yes I use distractions often and it works most of the time!
On the topic of sharing, there is the a new book in the Bad Kitty book series…
Bad Kitty: Kitten Trouble
There’s terrible news in the neighborhood next to Kitty’s!
A conflict there is growing worse and worse. It started as an argument and has now turned into a full-fledged fight. Worst of all: The cat shelter has been destroyed.Kitty’s family decides it’s time to do something to help. They have an idea to foster as many displaced kittens as possible.
Kitty won’t mind, right?
Well . . . not exactly. Kitty does seem to mind.
She minds A LOT.
Will our favorite bad-tempered friend learn to share her space, her food, and **GASP!** her toys?
Find out in this hilarious and poignant addition to the Bad Kitty series.
This is a great chapter book for kids that is part of the Bad Kitty series. My 7-year-old daughter recently discovered this series at school and was excited to see a new title coming out. As a parent, I love that there is a life lesson in there that will hopefully click for her while she reads. Very cute book with a mischevious character. I haven’t had the chance to read it yet as she is but I am all for anything that keeps my kids interested in reading!
