New job in another city, and you don’t want to make the commute? Looking to do some long-term traveling? Needing a bigger household to grow your family? It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are, you’re moving on to find new adventures!
Moving is a mix of excitement and annoyance. You’re ready to be trying out your luck with something new, but you also just realized you have 18 boxes of clothes. If you want to move without driving yourself crazy, then you’re in luck! I have a number of tips to help you keep your head on straight.
Start Four Piles
Pick a room and start three piles! This is the beginning of you moving on to new adventures. One is keep, one is donate, one is trash, and one is sell. The things you want to keep will be put in the corner of a room, and we will come back to those later! The things to donate aren’t worthy of your new adventures, but they’re still in decent condition. The things to sell are outdated, broken, or nasty! You shouldn’t be holding onto those anyways. The things to sell will help you recover your moving expenses! Work your way through your home, one room at a time. After you’re finished making your piles, take out the trash. With the trash out of the way, you have more room to box up and carry out the items that need to be donated. BAM! Half the nightmare is over. Try to limit one room to put the items you want to sell. You need some room to tag and take pictures of them, but you don’t want to mix those items in with things you are about to start packing.
Efficiently packing for your new adventure
You have to feel more organized with everything sorted and carried off. There is a trick to packing that will help you when you start to unpack. You want to continue one room at a time! Grab yourself a few rolls of different color duct tape and open up your notepad in your phone. Each color of tape will be assigned to a room. Choose easy to interpret topics like kitchen, master bedroom, kids’ bedrooms, living room. Taping your boxes is an easier system than labeling them, because the bright colors of the tape can be seen on two different sides of the boxes! You’re helping out yourself, but also helping out your movers!
