Food is usually something people think of just to fill their bellies but it can also be something that helps out the rest of their bodies. Different foods help different parts of your body. There are even foods that can help improve eye health. Healthy eyesight is something that everyone should be thankful for and this Thanksgiving it is easy to incorporate some eye healthy foods that can help out your whole family. I am all about sneaking in healthy foods for my family! They will get delicious foods and I can feel better knowing they are packed with nutrients they need.
What are some healthy foods?
- Sweet potatoes are rich in omega-3s and studies show it can help protect tiny blood vessels in the eyes and help ensure moisture
- Avocados are great source of vitamins A, C, B6, and E which can help defend macular degeneration, cataracts and other age-related eye diseases
- Spinach is a great source of calcium, iron, thiamin and other vitamins to help prevent cataracts
Your eyes are something that are easy to take for granted and once they get “sick” its hard (if not impossible) to go back. Why not add in some healthy foods while your already cooking your holiday meal? I know for my family we love sweet potatoes and usually have a spinach dip appetizer. I will be putting out some avocados as well for my family and hopefully they will choose to take some! All I can do is put it out and hope for the best!
Maybe I’ll make some of my Secret Recipe Brownies for dessert to get avocados in my family’s tummies – they still don’t know the secret!
Our favorite soup has spinach in it but its probably not something we’ll make for Thanksgiving so I’ll have to think of another way:
VSP Vision Care, the nation’s largest not-for profit vision care company, has come out with some great resources to learn more about eye healthy foods. Check out the Learn About Your Eyes page to learn more about eye healthy foods.

I have wore glasses since I was six, and I like the resource from VSP about healthy eye foods. Wish I would have known this then.
